THE WAIT THAT FELT LIKE FOREVER – A FARMER’S REWARD

A week ago, my Jersey cow was due for calving, but the expected day came and went with no signs of labor. One day turned into two, two turned into three, and before I knew it, an entire week had passed. Anxiety slowly crept in as I remembered the old farmers’ belief that a delayed calving often results in a bull calf. Despite the uncertainty, I remained hopeful.
Then, on the morning of June 1st, everything changed. Labor began at 6 a.m., and within hours the moment of truth had arrived. As the calf was safely delivered, there was only one question on my mind: would it be a bull or a heifer? The answer brought a smile I could not hide. It was a heifer calf—a symbol of the future, growth, and the next generation of the farm.
Sometimes the greatest rewards come after the longest wait.

THE WAIT THAT FELT LIKE FOREVER - A FARMER’S REWARD
There is something about farming that teaches patience better than any classroom ever can. As farmers, we plant seeds without knowing exactly how the season will turn out, we raise animals while hoping for the best outcomes, and we learn to trust the process even when things do not go according to plan.
One week ago, my Jersey cow was due for calving. Like any farmer expecting a new addition to the herd, I was excited and optimistic. However, as the expected date passed without any signs of labor, excitement slowly turned into concern. One day became two, two became three, and before I knew it, an entire week had passed. Every morning I checked on her, hoping to see signs that calving was imminent, but nothing seemed to happen.
Growing up around livestock, I often heard older farmers say that when a cow delays calving, chances are high that it will produce a bull calf. Whether true or not, that thought kept crossing my mind as the days went by. Deep down, I was hoping for a heifer calf, knowing what it would mean for the future of my dairy enterprise.
Then came the morning of the first day of the month. At around 6:00 a.m., I noticed the first signs of labor. Immediately, my anxiety turned into anticipation. Two hours later, the amniotic sac ruptured, and I knew the moment of truth had finally arrived. After days of waiting, wondering, and worrying, the answer was only minutes away.
With a little assistance, the calf was safely delivered. At that point, nothing else mattered. Not the breed, not the size, not the color. There was only one thing I wanted to know the gender of the calf.
As I moved closer to confirm, my heart was pounding. Then I saw it. It was a heifer calf.🥳 At that moment, all the stress and uncertainty disappeared. The joy and excitement were impossible to hide. For many people, it may have looked like just another calf, but for me, it represented much more. A heifer is the future of the dairy farm. She is a future milk producer, a future mother, and a future contributor to the growth of the herd. She is a symbol of continuity, productivity, and long-term profitability.
The month could not have started on a better note. In fact, I was so excited that I jokingly decided a gender reveal party was necessary. The event is scheduled for this coming Sunday, although attendance will be strictly limited to me and my farm team. No outside invitations will be issued including arsenal fans lead by my sister Nje Carolinell 😹
This experience reminded me that farming is a journey filled with uncertainty, patience, and hope. Sometimes the best rewards come after the longest waits. Today, I am not just celebrating the birth of a calf; I am celebrating the future of my farm.
And that is why I remain a proud and happy farmer. This is Mkulima Chronicles where every day on the farm becomes a story worth telling.
